Myrtleford Golf Club Bulletin – February 23rd, 2024

Men’s Comp.

Last Saturday, an excellent field of 30 players played in a Stableford event. The greens were recently cored, but this did not worry a lot of golfers.

Terrific to have four ladies play and Beth Roseby played very well to win the ladies prize with 34 points on a countback from Sandra Piazza.

A grade winner was Brad Carroll with an excellent 41 points, runner up Craig Piazza with 38.

B grade winner was Harry McKerral with a great 38 points, runner up Peter Stewart with 37 points. When was the last time a teenager won an event?

Last Wednesday, 15 players played Stableford.

Following the heavy rain the night before, the greens were very heavy and slow, great to have 3 visitors from Beechworth.

Jacob Piddington won the day with 42 points, runner up Jade Galvan with 41. Jade has now entered the single handicap Club, for a player who only started playing a couple of years ago, he has done remarkably well. And his first comment to me last Wednesday, “when is the next working bee?” ...he obviously enjoyed our amazing working bee last week!

Rigoni Shield

Two quarter finals were played last Saturday. Both games went to the 15th.

Crackers McKerral and Doc Rossato defeated Brendan Wheeler and James McPherson.

Macca and Harry McKerral defeated Craig Shewell and Wazza Rowney.

The other two quarter finals have to be played before 3rd March.

Course

What a fantastic working bee last Sunday. Commencing at 7.30am, for some members, we did not finish until 5 in the afternoon.

The tree on the sixth and branches are priority concerns within the Club.

21 members went about removing branches with great enthusiasm, My first big SHOUT OUT is to Jim Martin. When I approached Jim to be the Greens and Grounds Chairman, I knew the Committee was in good hands. Jim crossed every “T” and dotted every “I” in organizing last Sunday. Well done, Jim. And his lieutenant Brad Carroll was not far behind, both men still working up to 5 pm with Rocky , Ichlis and myself.

Mathew and Simon Crisp for the hire of their cherry picker.

Ben Holmes for operating the cherry picker.

Jade Galvan did a fantastic job in pruning the trees lower down. When he finishes doing the whole course, we will have a course to be proud of.

Wazza Rowney and Paul Cowman, our chainsaw operators on the ground.

James McPherson for the use of his father’s truck.

Rocky Rockliff, (what a member) he drives from Yackandandah, operates his backhoe all day and all he wants is our thanks. He will tell you, that what we are doing is making our Club up there with the best in the area, he is a very loyal Clubman.

To Andrew Roseby, Andrew Loftus (New member), Craig Shewell, Evan Jones, Fox O’Donohue, Jon Harrington, Max Currie (country Member), Geoff Veldman – a huge thankyou for giving up your time on a Sunday.

To our caterer Trout Batt, our drink man David Clark and last was to Lesley, running errands, pruning shrubs and gave the Clubhouse a good clean up in the afternoon.

If you see any of the above members, shake hands and thank them.

We will need at least another good working bee, maybe March 24th. Confirmation to follow.

Our drainage works commence on Tuesday 5th March, another tick on improvements to our course.

The Club has ordered 20 tonnes of gypsum to be spread in the next couple of weeks.

Ladies Comp

Last Tuesday, 18 ladies played in a stableford event.

Lyn Dwyer was in great touch, hitting an excellent 39 points, runner up Kerry Newton with 36 points.

9 hole winner was our 9 hole specialist Betty Newton with 18 points, runner up Suzette Kelly.

Summer Cup winners were presented with their Cups - Liz Orton for 18 holes (av. 35.66) & Robyn Ternes in the 9 hole Div (av 19.5). Well done ladies

Yesterday, 17 ladies played in par event.

Liz Orton played very well with a +2, runner up Marnie, equal with the card.

Suzette Kelly turned the cards on Betty Newton, Suzette, fantastic 20 points, runner up Betty.

Recycling Cans and bottles

Thanks to members who have brought and continue to bring their cans and bottles up to the Clubhouse. Another little revenue winner for the Club.

Greg Claney

The very sad news has come through this week that our Country Member Greg Claney passed away.

Greg has been a member of our Club for close to thirty years and was a very good golfer.

When he resided in Myrtleford, his business was a long-standing supporter of our Club, in fact one of the original tee sponsors.

Moving to Albury to live, Greg retained his membership as a Country Member.

He was a keen North East Veteran member and only last December, he won an Ambrose event.

The Club sends their condolences to his wife Monica, Sean, Liam and family.

Greg’s funeral will be at the Football Clubrooms on Thursday 29th February, 11.30am. I suggest Members wear MGC Shirts if attending. (MGC Ladies are making sandwiches and also catering for a funeral on Monday 4th.)

GA Workshop 21st February

Thanks to Heather Street, Kerry Newton, Marg Curtis, David Clark, John Costello, Brad Carroll who joined me early last Wednesday to meet with GA, planning our Masterplan.

We covered many subjects, including finance, constitution and OH&S. OH&S was a strong feature at our last working bee. Jim Martin is very astute in making sure all volunteers understand OH&S. All members and employees must adhere to OH & S requirements - no short cuts.

Next workshop is in a couple of months time.

A HUGE THANKS to Faye McLees and Carol Ames who were at the Clubhouse to cook a breakfast at 7.00am, thank you very much to both of you, for such and early start - very much appreciated.

Alpine Classic

Entries have now closed.

Over 156 players have entered.

The Club needs 15 carts on Monday, 18th and 10 carts on the Thursday 21st. As we have 8 carts, we will be looking for cart support on both days.
